Atlanta's History of Art Education


1903 - Art minded Atlanta women began the Atlanta Art Association

1905 - A Fulton county judge granted a charter to the Atlanta Art Association

1926 - The Joseph Madison High Family donated their house on Peachtree Street to house the Associations school and museum

1927 - A permanent school was established with professional instructors

1928 - Benjamin Edgar Shute became founder of the Atlanta College of Art and began developing a curriculum and administration

1938 - University of Georgia opens art department with focuses in studio art, art education, and art history. Lamar Dodd heads the department

1949 - The ACA was awarded academic accredidation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design

1965 - Emory University established an art history department staffed with contemporary art and criticism experts Clark Poling and John Howett

1969 - ACA recieved accredidation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, making it the only fully accredited college of art and design in the Southeast

1973 - Lamar Dodd stepped down from heading the art department at UGA

1975 - The Massey Business College switched its focus to art becoming The Art Institute of Atlanta

1978 - The Savannah College of Art and Design was legally incorporated in the state of Georgia on Sept. 29

1979 - SCAD purchased and renovated the Savannah Volunteer Guard Armory to serve as the first classroom and administration building
